American Red Cross Urges Fourth of July Safety

For Immediate Release

TUCSON, June 30, 2009 - The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross wishes everyone a fun, festive, and safe celebration for the Fourth of July holiday. We're here to remind everyone that all consumer fireworks are banned in the State of Arizona (including skyrockets, firecrackers, torpedoes, roman candles, daygo bombs, sparklers, you name it), and to please keep in mind the following safety tips:

  • It's Hot! Keep yourself, your children and your pets hydrated by making sure they drink plenty of water.
  • While grilling, designate the area around your barbeque a "No Play Zone." Keeping kids and pets well away until grill equipment is completely cool will help prevent burns and other accidents.
  • When attending a fireworks display stay at least 125 feet from the area where the fireworks are set off.
  • If any part of a firework falls to the ground, don't touch it. If you happen to find any which have not exploded, contact your local fire or police department.
  • Keep pets far from fireworks displays of any kind and safe inside the house. The loud noises can hurt sensitive ears and scare animals, prompting even the most docile pet to behave erratically or run away.
  • Never, EVER, fire a gun in the air to celebrate July Fourth. People have been killed by stray falling bullets, and in Arizona, it's a felony offense under "Shannon's Law."
  • Of course, please HAVE FUN.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS!

By providing compassionate support along with meals, emergency shelter and clothing, the Red Cross offers hope when a child or family’s world is turned upside down. We’re there as they begin their road to recovery.   Our organization is volunteer-led and serves more than one million people in communities across Pima, Greenlee, Graham, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties.  Every day Red Cross volunteers provide disaster relief to their neighbors affected by disasters, emergency assistance to members of the Armed Forces, preparedness and safety education to families and businesses, and international communications assistance for refugees. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on the generosity of our Arizona neighbors to provide these services. To make a financial donation, enroll for a lifesaving skills course, sign-up to volunteer, request disaster assistance or Armed Forces emergency assistance, contact your local American Red Cross Southern Arizona Chapter by visiting
