Fry's Customers Raise $31,000 to Help Disaster Victims

For Immediate Release

Fry’s Customers Raise $31,000 to Help Disaster Victims

(PHOENIX) October 12, 2009 The American Red Cross Chapters in Arizona are extending a thank-you to Fry’s Food Stores customers statewide for donating $31,000 to the Local Disaster Relief and Health and Safety Programs. The money was raised over a three month period during a customer-driven fundraising campaign.

“In this tough economy fewer people have a safety net to take care of their families after an emergency,” said JoEllen Lynn, Director of Public Affairs, Fry’s Food Stores. “Through the quarterly campaign, our customers are doing what they can to help their neighbors in need.”

The Disaster Relief Program is dedicated to meeting the immediate emergency needs of disaster victims such as a safe place to sleep, food and emotional support. “Red Cross volunteers are on the scene of a disaster to provide care and comfort after people have lost so much,” said Richard White, Southern Arizona Chapter Chief Executive Officer. “This donation will provide significant benefits to families impacted by disaster.”

The generous donation is also helping the Red Cross chapters focus on getting prepared for disasters and training people to save lives with CPR and First Aid.

“We’re grateful to Fry’s customers who are making a difference in our community,” said Bill Epps, Grand Canyon Chapter Chief Executive Officer. “We know times are tough and every single donation whether it’s $1.00 or $25.00 - means a lot.”

This is the second time Fry’s has selected the local Red Cross chapters as the beneficiaries of the customer fundraising campaign. Fry’s and Red Cross have partnered to raise funds for large, national disasters. Locally, Fry’s has been a key resource during disasters by providing urgent donations of food and water.

“We value the work Red Cross volunteers do in our community every single day,” added Lynn. “We are proud to partner with an organization that works to improve and save lives.”

Red Cross volunteers across the state responded to more than 800 local disasters last year and 45,000 people were trained in Red Cross lifesaving skills.
