Red Cross Responds to Help 8 Displaced Due to Local Disasters

For Immediate Release

(TUCSON) April 1, 2009, 2:30 pm - Red Cross volunteers stopped what they were doing yesterday, put on a disaster vest and helped their neighbors in need.

After receiving notification of three incidents, a team of Red Cross volunteers responded to the following situations.

  • A mobile home fire in the 6800 block of W. Flying W destroyed the entire home and displaced one individual. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers interviewed him, assessed the immediate disaster-caused needs, and is providing financial assistance, food, and clothing.

  • A van crashed into a home on Tucson's south side, displacing a family of six, including two children. Based on assessment of the family's needs, Red Cross is providing them with food and shelter for two nights.  The family is currently unable to re-enter the home while the structural integrity is being evaluated.

  • A house fire on Navajo St. near Ft.. Lowell Rd. and First Ave. destroyed a home, leaving one person homeless and with no possessions. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers interviewed the resident and assessed their home’s damage to help determine the immediate disaster-caused needs.  Based on those needs, the Red Cross is providing assistance with food and clothing.

Over the next several days, our client services staff will stay in touch with the families and provide referrals as they begin their road to recovery.

In Southern Arizona, American Red Cross volunteers respond to a local house fire or flood every other day.  The Southern Arizona Red Cross is able to meet the immediate needs of our neighbors in need because of the generous support of Southern Arizonans.
