Red Cross Responds to Help Families Displaced by Canelo Wildfire

For Immediate Release

(TUCSON) May, 6 2009, 10:15 am -  Red Cross is deploying the Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and 2 volunteers en route to the Canelo fire to assist families who have lost their homes to the fire.  The ERV is leaving Tucson any minute now!

After receiving notification of a wildfire burning in the Westgate side of Ft. Huachuca south of Elgin now referred to as the Canelo Fire - a team of 6 Red Cross volunteers responded last night and is in the area today.  We are assisting one family right now, and will stand by to assist any family in the area in need of assistance.

Individuals and families who are in need of food, clothing, shelter or other assistance because they can not live in their home (i.e. their home is affected by the wildfire) are asked to contact the Red Cross for assistance at 1-800-341-6943.

Most recent reports indicate at least 3 houses have been totally lost, and 1 family has already contacted the Red Cross for assistance.  Red Cross workers are canvassing the rural area in Cochise County in search of any other families who may be affected by the loss of their homes.

Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers have met / will meet with the individuals who were displaced, interview them and assess their home’s damage to help determine their immediate disaster caused needs.  Based on those needs, Red Cross volunteers can provide shelter, food, clothing, financial assistance, mental health services, and other essentials like baby supplies, diapers, prescription medication replacement, personal hygiene kits and clean up kits for houses that are livable but damaged.

Over the next several days, our client services staff will stay in touch with families and provide referrals as they begin their road to recovery.

In Southern Arizona, American Red Cross volunteers respond to a local house fire or flood every other day.  The Southern Arizona Red Cross is able to meet the immediate needs of our neighbors in need because of the generous support of Southern Arizonans.
