(TUCSON) May, 28 2009 -- Red Cross is getting out our lassos, reeling in our volunteers and community partners, and running our 2nd Annual Shelter Rodeo Training this Saturday, May 30th, 2009. Participants will learn all aspects of how to prepare and open a shelter just in time to be ready for wildfire and flood season in case we are called to help neighbors in need in southern Arizona.
When a disaster happens, Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers race to the scene, assess immediate housing and food needs, and assess damage. If a number of people are displaced, we will open a shelter for a number of nights until all residents have made permanent housing arrangements. In the shelter, we work with the individuals who were displaced, assess their needs and provide them with food, clothing, financial assistance, medical care, mental health services, and other essentials like baby supplies, diapers, and prescription medication replacement.
The Shelter Rodeo trains new partners and volunteers, and offers current partners and volunteers the opportunity to brush up on their skills in case they are called into action at a moment’s notice. In this region, wildfires, Monsoonal floods, and power outages are the most common reasons that the Red Cross sets up shelters.
Operating a successful shelter takes more than luck. The Shelter Rodeo is designed to make our shelters a place where the residents feel safe and cared for. This is a “hands-on” learning experience which is informative and fun.
