You Did It! Red Cross Chapters Thank Arizonans

Raised $125,000 for challenge grant, doubling each dollar For Immediate Release

TUCSON, November 16, 2009 -- Your local Red Cross Chapters are extending a big thank you to individuals, local businesses and foundations for helping us reach our fundraising goal of $125,000. A Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold challenge grant, launched in May, doubled every donation earning $250,000 for the Disaster Relief Program.

“Freeport-McMoRan is committed to the well-being and safety of our communities," said Tracy Bame, President, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation. ”We are moved by the support Arizonans have shown in helping disaster victims get on the road to recovery."

From mining towns to metropolitan areas, Red Cross volunteers respond to a home fire nearly twice a day. Last year, volunteers from the Grand Canyon and Southern Arizona Chapters were on the scene of 695 local disasters providing assistance to 2,840 people.

Most local disasters don’t make headlines like major disasters, but their impact on individuals and families is just as tragic. “As firefighters battle the blaze, Red Cross emergency responders are there to ensure people have a safe place to sleep and they begin the relief process that provides financial assistance for food, clothing, eyeglasses, medication and other essentials,” said Richard White, Southern Arizona Chief Executive Officer.

While the challenge grant provided a tremendous boost to the Red Cross’s ability to provide disaster relief, the need to help Arizonans impacted by disaster remains. “In this economy, fewer people have a safety net to help their families after an emergency,” said Bill Epps, Grand Canyon Chapter Chief Executive Officer. "We would like to encourage Arizonans to continue to consider the Red Cross when making donations to their community."
