Children across Southern Arizona Generously Give to Haiti

Kids and teens have made personal sacrifices or found creative ways to raise funds for disaster relief.

A number of young people have paid visits to our headquarters on Broadway Blvd. in Tucson in recent weeks and we've delighted in meeting every single one of them! Motivated by the suffering in Haiti, these kids have raised money in a variety of ways.

Some kids are selfless. Some are great entrepreneurs. All worked hard or sacrificed something so they could help make the world a better place.

We at the Red Cross are thrilled to enable them to help. Here are some of their stories.

Editor's Note: Because we have more information about some children than others, we mention their names where we can. And there are more kids' stories than we have space to include here. We acknowledge EVERYONE's generosity and hard work.

An entreprenurial 13-year-old boy carried groceries for customers shopping at a Fry's grocery store, in exchange for a donation to help the people of Haiti. His hard work paid off, as he collected $650. High-five!

A teenage girl from Sierra Vista had been saving her money to purchase a digital camera when the earthquake occurred. Her feeling that others needed the money more motivated her to donate her savings to American Red Cross. A sincere thank you.

Joey, Cheyenne, and Colton Inturri were going to get some Valentines' money from their grandmother, but asked her instead to make a gift on their behalf for disaster relief in Haiti. Sometimes, knowing that you have given to others is the greatest gift of all.

The children in the Wilkie family are masters at origami, and made a zillion little paper creatures, which they sold at their school and their church, to raise $211 for Haiti disaster relief. Great work!

Jacobson I Helped Haiti t-shirt girls Twin sisters Sophia and Natalia Jacobson, from Senita Valley Elementary School, made t-shirts that say "I helped Haiti. Did you?" Sales of their shirts have brought in at least $200 so far, and the girls' goal is $1000. To finance the shirts, the sisters sold some of their own clothing, and asked businesses for donations.

KVOA Channel 4 news did a wonderful story about them. This quote sums up their feelings: "We have so much here in America. You should be glad that you have food when you want some. You know, when you want some water, you just get it right away."

To get your "I helped Haiti. Did you?" shirt, e-mail the girls' parents at ihelpedhaiti@hotmail.com.

Mrs. Hayashi-Willis' 2nd Grade class from Van Buskirk Elementary School very proudly raised $37 for Haiti Earthquake relief efforts -- all by themselves. Many of the kids gave up their allowance or chore money, because they want to help the people in Haiti "be happy." Because Mrs. Hayashi-Willis is from Japan, she's no stranger to earthquakes, and helped her students understand their effects. Great job, kids!

Ms. Pena's class from Tucson Country Day School raised $50. Way to go!

Natalie HernandezNatalie Hernandez, a 2nd-Grader from Soleng Tom Elementary School, organized a fundraiser at her school, and in a short time of collecting coins, raised $650! This photo of her with our Development Director, Jennifer Tersigni, was snapped when she visited our office to deliver her gift. Thanks, Natalie, and all of Soleng Tom, for all your hard work!

The latest information about the Haiti Relief effort, including photos, can always be found in the Red Cross Newsroom.
