News Release

TUCSON, September 15, 2010 – The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross is proud to have the first Red Cross facility in the U.S. to be solar-powered, and will host an official dedication and reception of their new solar panels on September 21.

Funded through a public-private partnership, the photovoltaic panels that sit on the social-service agency’s roof did not cost them a single penny, and will save them funds that can be redirected to fulfilling the Red Cross’ mission of saving lives and helping children and families across Southern Arizona.

The partnership includes a gift from the Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation Inc.; a grant from the State of Arizona Department of Commerce, in partnership with the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; and TEP’s Non-Residential Solar Electric Up-Front Incentive Program.  Installed by Net Zero Solar, the photovoltaic panels are expected to generate at least 80 percent, and possibly 100 percent of the Chapter’s electrical needs.

The Red Cross is uniquely positioned among charities.  In times of disaster, we all expect the American Red Cross to “be there.” This means that during times of war, state and national emergencies, terrorist attacks, mass power outages, or pandemic diseases, the American Red Cross is expected to be ready at a moment’s notice to help people in need with food, water, shelter, clothing and an array of other humanitarian services.

Founded in 1916, the American Red Cross Southern Arizona Chapter is a humanitarian organization that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  It serves a five-county area, providing disaster relief, military support services, and life-saving skills to over 28,000 children, adults, and families in Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, and Greenlee Counties each year.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
