AEDs Could Save 50,000 Lives This Year Learn How to Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

In the time it takes to read this page, sudden cardiac arrest will have claimed another victim. This year alone, 330,000 U.S. adults died before reaching a hospital.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Up to 50,000 deaths could be prevented each year if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED, a small device that can restart a heart that has stopped beating) is available for immediate use. During sudden cardiac arrest, it takes just 4 to 6 minutes for brain damage to set in. Yet, the average time it takes for an ambulance to respond to a 911 call is more than 6 minutes. Actions taken in the first 6 minutes before an ambulance arrives can mean life or death.
