Communications & Development Officer
Department: Development
Job Classification: Full Time Exempt Position
Responsible to: Chief Development Officer
Salary: $30,000 - $35,000 annually DOE
Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer, this position is responsible for carrying out communications duties in the local American Red Cross chapter area with a focus on media relations, social media, Disaster Public Affairs, community outreach and assisting with development activities to support annual fundraising and public relations initiatives.
Communications Responsibilities:
- Develop and carry out the strategic communication plan for the regional chapter
- Act as and/or coordinate an on the record media spokesperson for chapter
- Develop and distribute press materials, including press releases, talking points, op-eds, letters to the editor for local disasters, chapter events, initiatives
- Drive earned media coverage for local fundraising programs
- Ensure distribution of nationally developed press materials to local media in order to raise local visibility for major corporate initiatives such as the Holiday Giving Campaign, Holiday Mail for Heroes and other programs
- Maintain a media distribution list
- Maintain positive relationships with members of the media and work with chapter executive and other staff to maintain those relationships
- Proactively pitch positive media stories to local media outlets
- Work with NHQ contacts to develop a communication strategy and press materials in the event of crisis or reputation management issues
- Develop and maintain a Disaster Public Affairs capacity within the chapter including to the ability to communicate with clients and donors about local and national disasters
- Facilitate trainings to build public affairs volunteer capacity for the chapter
- Participate in Disaster Public Affairs deployments beyond the chapter
- Develop and carry out a web presence and social media strategy for the region
- Maintain, either directly or through volunteers, social media platforms consistent with the strategy
- Develop photo and video content for local social media and web platforms
Development/Fundraising Responsibilities:
- Plan annual Heroes fundraising event, including sponsor solicitation, budgeting, event logistics, volunteers, sponsor recognition, etc.
- Organize all aspects of the monthly Red Cross Live! tours.
- Promote chapter events and community outreach efforts in the media and community calendars.
- Serve as the agency liaison for all community outreach fairs, third party fundraising activities and in-kind fundraising.
- Ensure participation in relevant community fairs by either attending on behalf of the organization or working with the volunteer coordinator to staff these engagements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, philanthropic studies or other related field.
- Two years of progressive responsibility in related work area preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Proficiency with various social media platforms, website design/maintenance, and the ability to produce content for those sites is a must.
- Creative, strong team player who possesses the ability to work in fast paced, quickly changing environment.
- Must be available to work nights, weekends and in response to sudden emergencies; reliable transportation is critical.
- Excellent media skills, the ability to identify a newsworthy story and the ability to write effectively and quickly are also highly valued in this position.
- Attention to detail and superb customer service skills a must.
- Sensitivity to cultural differences of clients, volunteers, and our community.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
